The church in Philadelphia.
Revelation 3:7-13 (New International Version)
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.
We already know that Jesus was the ancestor of David-(Matthew 1:1). I really like the analogy of the key, because it shows total control, especially in the fact that nobody, except Jesus, has control over Heaven & Hell!
See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. The door that no one can shut, shows the truth that Jesus IS the way to the Father, (John 14:6). Once we know Jesus as Lord & Savior, the way to the Father will ALWAYS BE OPEN. I also like the part when we read that the people have little strength. This is as it should be-that we ARE people of little strength. That by ourselves, we can't do anything. But, even the smallest amount of faith, is enough for Jesus to work in & through us! Remember this verse:
"Matthew 17:20 (New International Version)
He replied, "Because you have so little faith. I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. Although, I feel that this wouldn't actually happen, but rather, it is symbolic of the confidence that we have in Christ, that he HAS chosen us to be His Children.
Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth. I am coming soon. Hold on to what you have, so that no one will take your crown. Him who overcomes I will make a pillar in the temple of my God. Never again will he leave it. I will write on him the name of my God and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem, which is coming down out of heaven from my God; and I will also write on him my new name. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. This whole section is talking about how God will reward those who stand firm in their faith in Christ! We will be secure in the knowledge, that that we will never have to worry about anything coming between us & our Savior ever again!
We can INDEED hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to us!
