Title: Trusting God to Do What's Right
On February 15, 1947, Glenn Chambers boarded a plane bound for Quito, Ecuador,
to begin his ministry in missionary broadcasting. But he never arrived. The
plane crashed into a mountain peak, and there were no survivors.
Before he left the Miami airport, however, the young man wanted to write his
mother a letter. All he could find for stationery was a page of advertising on
which was written the single word "WHY?" He hastily scribbled a note. After
Chambers' mother learned of her son's death, his letter arrived. She opened the
envelope, took out the paper and unfolded it. Staring her in the face was the
question "WHY?"
Why is one of those questions that often doesn't get answered. But can we trust
God anyway?
What Does God Say?
"O LORD, how long will this go on?Will you hide yourself forever?How long will
your anger burn like fire?…Blessed be the LORD forever! Amen and amen!" (Psalm
89:46, 52; NLT).
How do you think the writer of this psalm was feeling when he wrote these
verses?
How do you feel when God seems to be hiding from you?
What does the writer of this psalm conclude about the Lord?
My Thoughts
The word "blessed" is associated with grace and mercy. When we can't sense God's
presence, when He doesn't seem to meet our desire for answers, it's difficult to
think of Him as the source of grace and mercy. The response the psalmist comes
to, however, is "blessed (i.e. gracious and merciful) be the Lord forever."
My Part
Someone has said, "If you can't see God's hands, trust His heart." Take a
styrofoam cup and label it "grace and mercy." Cover the cup with a cloth. Is
"grace and mercy" still there even though you can't see it? Of course it is. Ask
God to give you the same assurance about Himself. Keep the cup and cloth
somewhere you can see it until the truth it represents is made real in your own
heart.
