Monday Update....Finally! The update I've been hoping to send! Evan has emerged from his coma over the weekend!!
His first word to Aunt Kitty was "No!" early Friday morning. He has continued to talk over the weekend, telling the therapist his phone number, where he lives, where he goes to school etc., yesterday afternoon. I was lucky enough to spend some time with Evan last night and we had a conversation about movies. He asked me a question, made comments about a movie he liked, remembered some details from the Indiana Jones movies and helped me remember character names. His voice is small and these comments come between short rests, but it is incredibly encouraging! Evan's personality is also coming out as well. Being Easter weekend, several family members visited with Evan at the nursing home. At one point he looked around the room and said, "Too many women!"
Evan was able to have a little sherbet and while being fed, took the sthingy from his mother's hand and maneuvered it to his mouth accurately. He also stood for the first time while being steadied by his big brother, Travis. The next step. Evan will have to be evaluated by the doctors to determine where he will go next for specific treatment. Evan still has so much to go through in this miracle story. It will certainly be a test of patience and endurance. Thank you God for this miracle - we give you all the praise and glory!
Tuesday update... Good Morning. Another day of progress to report: Evan continues to improve. A representative from Shepherd, the brain trauma treatment center in Atlanta, will be here by the end of the week to evaluate Evan for admittance to their facility. Please pray for Evan to become stronger physically and mentally and for him to be awake when the Shepherd rep visits!
The doctors have allowed Evan to have some semi-solid food introduced into his system. Today he has had a little bit of a chocolate shake and some applesauce. Evan needs to gain weight to assist in his progress.
Yesterday Evan did a little adding and multiplying (2s are his favorite) - single digits only. Today as he was being helped getting dressed he told his mom, "You're as slow as Christmas!" Teenage attitude. I love it! It is wonderful to hear Lori sounding happy again. Thank you for being Evan's prayer warriors!
Wednesday update... More good news.
Evan has been evaluated by a representative from the Children's Hospital of Atlanta and accepted into their program. If all the arrangements come together, he could be leaving the nursing home as early as Friday. This is a different hospital than the one we had talked about previously. Shepherd does not have an opening at this time; it could be up to two weeks before anything is available. If I understood everything correctly, the program at Children's is in two parts. First, Evan will be admitted to the hospital and Lori will be able to stay in his room. The second part of the program would be on an out-patient basis. They would have to remain in Atlanta and Evan would attend sessions from 8:00-4:00 each day. Evan has added oatmeal to his diet and is tolerating this well. This next step on the road to recovery will be a challenge of a different kind for Evan and his family.
Thank you so much for remembering and caring for Evan.
