"The Abundant Life" - Devotion for April 2nd, 2007
Today's Scripture
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destory. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." - John 10:10
Today's Word
What is this 'abundant life' that Jesus spoke of?
Many Christians misinterpret what Jesus was saying when He said His followers would recieve an abundant life. Look at TV preachers for example. The abundant life is commonly interpreted to mean you will have a life full of riches and possessions, good health and happyness, relief from struggles and pain, and have a successful career in whatever area you choose.
This is not what Jesus taught. Jesus was a poor man; his Kingdom is not one of worldly riches and power, but of spiritual abundance, joy, and love. The abundant life has nothing to do with worldly possessions, relationships, your health, or your comfort and relief of pain and struggles. God does not exist to be a servant of your desires and needs. You exist for His purposes.
The abundant life Jesus is speaking of is a spiritual abundance. Many Christians today may attend church and glance at the scriptures now and then, but their hearts are far away from God. If we are honest with ourselves, most Christians would admit that they are more interested in the latest styles and fads, what's playing on TV, the next best movie, what's hot in the stock market, or the latest rumors going around school or the office. If they are honest with themselves, they will admit that their primary interest is not on God and His Word.
Jesus said that whoever drank of the water of life would never again be thirsty. He was talking about the abundant life when He said this. What He meant was that if you fill yourself up with the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, you will live a spiritually abundant life. You will find a joy and peace in Christ that no circumstance or tragic situation can take away from you.
We should not just be having a little taste of this living water every now and then. Jesus said to drink of it, so that it fulfills you. Drink of this living water of the gospel of Christ, by making every ounce of your actions, words, and thoughts, centered around God and His Word. Fill your heart with God's love, humble yourself in humility and repent of your sins.
Don't just claim to have made Jesus the Lord of your life; make Him the Lord of your life. Fill your heart with the love and forgiveness He has for you and others, drink deeply of the gospel of Jesus, and you will discover the real abundant life.
