Reflection #1 on 'Held' by Natalie Grant
This is what it is to be loved
And to know that the promise was
When everything fell we'd be held
Have you ever felt the loving arms of Jesus? You can, you know; any time you
pause long enough to give Him your attention. As I have mentioned before, I live
alone, yet not alone. It seems strange, and, yes, I have been called strange, to
think that the God of the universe lives with me, inside me and through me, but
He does.
One day I decided I would take this "Jesus in me" thing seriously. So I sat down
on the couch, opened my Bible and I prayed, "Lord, you know everything in this
Book, you understand it completely; help me do the same." I looked down at the
pages of John 6 and began to read the account of Jesus feeding the 5000.
Suddenly, I was there. I could feel the summer sun on my face. I could see the
crowds and feel the hunger pains. It was so real, it startled me. I felt like
Jesus had picked me up like a small child and carried me away to that hillside.
Another time I was alone, sitting on the edge of my bed. I had just come home
from my mother's funeral. I had spent the last few days being strong for
everyone else. And as I sat there in the dark, I cried out to Lord, "Where is my
comfort?" Immediately I felt them, His arms, wrapping around me.
"The eternal God is your refuge,
and underneath are the everlasting arms" (Deuteronomy 33:27, NIV).
That comfort had been available to me all along. But I had never reached out for
it. God's wisdom and insight into the Scriptures had been there, but I had never
asked for it.
In the song "Held," Natalie Grant sings about tough days, days when things don't
make sense, days when you may be angry, confused, hurting, afraid. Those are the
days you need the wisdom and the comfort of the everlasting arms of the Lord.
Won't you reach out to Him today? He is waiting.
